Core Values: What they Are and How They Show Up In Coaching

These are my core values for my coaching business. They inform how I coach, how I operate my coaching business, and the clients I work with. They also impact my clients’ experience in-session… so please take a look! (Especially if you are considering coaching with me).

If these values resonate and you share similar values, working with me might be a great fit. If you do not share these values, I recommend looking for a coach that feels more aligned with your values.

Practice Presence 🐢

Practicing presence is awareness of what’s going on in this moment, mentally and physically. It’s not a perpetual state of zen or a quiet mind – it’s being attentive (without judgement), grounded in the here and now.

“The past perpetuates itself through lack of presence. The quality of your consciousness at this moment is what shapes the future.”

Eckhart Tolle

How I live this value, as coach: I invite my clients to cultivate mindful awareness as much as possible, and I ask questions that encourage you to be present with yourself.

How you live this value, as client: You value mindfulness and believe in its importance. You’re open to trying exercises that bring you back into the present moment.

Continue Learning 👂

Curiosity is thoughtful questioning with the purpose of deeper connection and understanding. If we bring eagerness to learn about ourselves, many new possibilities may emerge.

“I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

How I live this value, as coach: I ask questions from a genuine desire to better understand my client – and for them to better understand themselves.

How you live this value, as client: You are brave enough to get curious about yourself. You value insight and knowledge over being ‘right’.

Grow Self-Reliance 💪

Self-reliance is a fundamental belief that power resides within us; that we are self-governing. Burning Man’s definition of self-reliance is ‘when individuals discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.’

“To find yourself, think for yourself.”

Socrates

How I live this value, as coach: I believe that you are the authority of your own life. I take responsibility for my own experience in coaching, and let you take responsibility for yours.

How you live this value, as client: You move away from feeling ‘helpless’ and towards ‘autonomous.’ You take responsibility for your coaching experience, and for your results.

Create Play & Pleasure 🪩

Playing is when we engage in activities for pleasure (rather than for practical purposes). Play and pleasure don’t require other people, but can sometimes hard to access. They are fun, feel good, and are even better when savored.

“Play touches and stimulates vitality, awakening the whole person—mind and body, intelligence and creativity, spontaneity and intuition. ”

- Viola Spolin

How I live this value, as coach: I practice allowing and savoring the pleasure in my life, personally and professionally. I practice being playful, to safely experiment and grow.

How you live this value, as client: You are practice being playful and feeling pleasure. Serious hard things come up and I will not bypass your reality. And, we can grow through play and pleasure.

Connect Bravely ❤️

I’m all about connection. And, it’s not just me. Relationships are fundamental to our experience of being human. Feeling safe to be authentic while relating with others (vulnerability) begets deep intimacy and loving community.

“The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives”

- Ester Perel

How I live this value, as coach: I do my best to create a safe(r) environment to support you in sharing openly. I aim to genuinely connect with my clients. And I respect when/how you choose to be vulnerable.

How you live this value, as client: You want to be seen and known in your relationships. You practice being vulnerable in session, when it feels safe. You tell me when it does *not* feel safe.
